Wine Club

p1 300x242 Wine ClubAllow me to introduce myself, Karl Elwood, our company, Elwood Wines, and how we hope to be your gateway to buying better wine as one of the advantages of being a member of the Ideas Factory.

One of my great fortunes has been working with two of the wine industries most influential characters; with Graham Chidgey at Laytons and with John Armit at Armit’s. This brought me into contact with some of the world’s greatest winemakers, who have inspired me throughout my time in this profession. For me, it is the personality behind the bottle that captured my imagination and has supplied me with the hidden story that goes with each wine that I have had the pleasure of tasting, selling, and even drinking myself.

I soon discovered that great wine makers are not exclusivel.

behind the finest and usually most expensive wines. There  are so many talented producers that have turned otherwise  under-performing estates into exciting gems. The explosion  of high quality wines from the New World demonstrated what  can be achieved with the right level of passion and skill, and  the Old World has quietly been going through a revolution  and we are seeing so many exciting wines from France,  Italy and Spain today and not just from the more celebrated  regions. Sadly, the production level from these estates is  often too small for the multiples or supermarkets to ship, so  very few wine drinkers will hear about them.

So I set up elwood wines in 2008, looking to offer wines  from these little known estates that I believe deliver great  value, especially important in times of tighter financial  responsibility. So I say continue to enjoy your wine and with a  little guidance, paying less for it does not necessarily mean a  compromise on quality.

I like to think that wine has two fundamental elements.

Firstly, it is about the people – the wine maker, the shipper  and their relationship with their customers and ultimately the  customer’s relationship with friends and family that finally  enjoy the wine together. Secondly, it is about the quality of  the wine that enhances the enjoyment as it takes its journey  from vineyard to table.

For my involvement, I would like to think that I can be part  of the links between the vineyard and your table and it is  with this ethos in mind that I have been invited by the Ideas  Factory to be your resident wine expert.

Wine is such a personal experience that we will not all like the  same things.  Twenty five years in this business has taught  me ways to try and understand which wines you will like best,  even if you are not sure yourself.  Afterall, it’s about building  relationships with your customers.

The aim of the Ideas Factory Wine Club, is to offer you mixed  cases of different wines, 15-20% off high street prices, with  notes on each, so that you know what you’re talking about  when you try them.  You will also be able to speak directly to  Karl Elwood on 01273 242535 or 07811360729 if you wish   to discuss any specific wine requirements.
