John has teamed up exclusively with The Ideas Factory to write a monthly column in our Newsletter, as well as give tips and techniques to budding traders. Here’s John:
Hi, my name is John Piper and I have been asked to say a few words about myself, my trading career and, more importantly, how I plan to help you in these short articles over coming months.
Firstly I’m a professional trader and I have made my money out of markets since I went full time in 1987. In the 1990s I decided I wanted to work with other traders and help them find the same success as I have.
As an example I spend a lot of time travelling because it is what I enjoy and I define success as doing what I want to do, and perhaps more importantly, NOT doing what I don’t want to do. I’m writing this from my balcony in Cambodia where the sun is shinning brightly. Later I plan to take out a catamaran for an hour or so, have some peppered prawns on the beach and then get back for 3 pm when the markets open.
So life is good and I have a lot to thank the markets for. Here are a few of the things I have done in my trading career to get to where I am today – on a balcony in Cambodia!
- Traded right through the 1987 Crash selling far too many puts!
- Managed money for two years making money 5 months out of every 6.
- Made £10,000 in one day trading futures.
- Made enough in one trade to buy a new Porsche.
- Traded a large position whilst having a few beers in a bar in Copenhagen
- Traded with over $1m
- At only one point in my entire career, thankfully, had a panic attack so severe I was reduced to lying on the floor in a cold sweat for 30 minutes.
- Got Merrill Lynch to refund an entire month’s commissions, several thousand $’s.
- Got wiped out.
- Made £20,000 in one month in my first year as a full-time trader.
Looking back some of the ways in which I approached markets in the early days can only be described as sheer lunacy! But I have paid my dues and after 30 years I know markets and trading inside out. To an extent I did it the hard way so you don’t need to.
I am also good at calling markets and back in 2006 I wrote a book called FINANCIAL CATACLYSM NOW!
There was not a financial cloud in the sky when that book was published and I was ridiculed for my views that stock and property markets were headed south BIG TIME. I was called a crank and, on one memorable occasion, almost got thrown bodily from a taxi – it turned out the taxi driver was a part time property tycoon. But that is how I like it because then I know I am right.
Those who read FINANCIAL CATACLYSM NOW! were given a truly invaluable early warning of what to expect – not that I sold many copies as very few people wanted a slice of reality back then.
Then it was time to buy and in December 2008 I told 15,000 of my clients to expect a solid low in the Spring – surprise, surprise in March equity markets bottomed out and have been rallying ever since – that was THE trade of 2009.
